FEATURED EMPLOYEE – Richard Meyers – – A Special Individual doing great things for thousands of people
Background of Richard’s involvement with The Ronald McDonald House and the 5K Run and Walk
The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) is an amazing home-away-from-home, for families with children in local hospitals. The RMH charges $15.00 a night; and if the family cannot afford the rate, the room is free.
In the year 2000, Richard’s wife, Kate, worked as a volunteer at RMH of Western New York. The RMH had different events that did not recognize or make money for the house. So, Kate suggested Richard (an avid runner) should put together a 5K run and walk to raise funds to benefit RMH. After a lot of preparation and discussions, Rich met with the Executive Director of the RMH. Despite his inexperience in organizing a race, Rich tapped into his network of friends in the Buffalo area, put together a management team and became the first Race Director for the RMH 5k Run & Walk. The management team designed a 5K race course, running through the many beautiful parts of Buffalo, and organized a highly rated post-race party. The first RMH 5k Run & Walk took place in July 2002,with 563 participants, raising $19,566. As of 2016, the event has grown to 1028 participants and they raised $77,500 for this year’s event. In 15 years, the RMH event has become the area’s premier run; and, Richard and his team have raised $762,000 net for the RMH. Outstanding work Richard! We celebrate Richard and his yeoman effort to create and grow this tremendous fund raiser for RMH; and we hope to see Richard achieve his goal of earning one-million dollars for Ronald McDonald House of Western NY.
